Gene de Souza presents
"Samba, Goal! Soccer and music in Brazil"
Thursday, September 4, 6pm-8pm

Gene de Souza

When speaking of Brazil, one immediately thinks of soccer and music. Yes, they are connected in many ways, and Gene de Souza will give an overview of how one has inspired the other over the last 100 years. From icon Pixinguinha and the birth of modern Brazilian music, the 1940's club songs of Lamartine Babo, the patriotic anthems of the 60's and 70's to the popular hits of Jorge Ben, Chico Buarque, Djavan, and how soccer stars today catapult artists to major success. In this intimate evening, guests will listen to a selection of music tracks with introductions by Gene de Souza.

Gene de Souza, a native of Rio de Janeiro, has been an active champion of Brazilian and world music in South Florida for over 15 years. After receiving a Bachelor's in International Relations from the University of Richmond, Gene came to Miami and started the award-winning Café Brasil Radio Show, Sundays at 6pm on 88.9FM WDNA. South Florida's only program 100% dedicated to Brazilian music, Café Brasil has been recognized twice by the Miami New Times "Best of Miami" awards and has also received three Brazilian International Press Awards. Since 2002, Gene is the Development Director at the Rhythm Foundation, the foremost presenter of world music in the Southeastern United States. With Rhythm Foundation, he has produced concerts with many international legends like Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Manu Chao, Bebo Valdes, Paco de Lucia, Ivete Sangalo and many more. Other activities include a music column for Gazeta Brazilian News, presentations about Brazilian music and participating in the Latin Grammy Awards Brazil committee.

Brazilian Cooking Class with Chef Adriana Assemany
Tuesday, September 9 at 7pm
101 Aragon Avenue

We'll explore the cuisine of Brazil this year with a series of five classes on the distinct foodie regions of this vast country. Join us for one, two or all five classes as Chef Adriana Assemany explores the exotic ingredients, techniques and flavors of each region.

Destination Brazil Part 4: North Region
Tues. September 9
7pm to 10pm.

We will learn the recipes and taste the amazing typical dishes of the North region of Brazil.

The strong native indigenous presence mixed with immigrants for various backgrounds marks the gastronomy of the North region of Brazil, considered by many, the most typical national cuisine.

Despite the Amazon roots, this region’s dishes were heavily influenced by the Portuguese immigrants, right from the onset of the colonization. Later on, during the exploration of the natural rubber, other immigrants – Lebanese, Japanese, Italians and even Brazilians from the neighboring Northeast region, who migrated during this same period -  also contributed to the local cuisine.

The Infinite Dimension
Fernanda Meirelles
October 2 from 7-9pm @ Wynwood Art Group

The energy at the center of Fernanda Meirelles paintings draws its roots on the infinite dimensions. They explode beyond their pictorial edges to a place only imagination can duel. Fernanda Meirelles latest series of work draw inspiration from her feelings and sometimes from the bucolic. Meirelles palette softens as she uses color to decipher her world; romantic sea greens, stormy blues, night-crawler blacks and red fire to show vivid moments and dueling thoughts as well as restless excitement.

At the heart of every painting in this series, a deliberate orange trace is splattered with a palette knife, or a brush. It re-routes the energy of the external world among the electric yellows, reds and all the lurid colors in nature.

Fernandas Meirelles’ works are fundamentally abstract, and if we were to distil these works into a single word it would be “energy”- and all the life struggles and dreams that word implies
