Miami Dade College Cultural Affairs Department launches MDCulture and leaps into a new era of thought-provoking cultural programs featuring performances, exhibitions, literary happenings and film screenings.

As part of this magical evening, MDC Live Arts will present the talented key virtuoso and skilled composer André Mehmari. By adding the rhythms of his native Brazil, he has created a language of unprecedented expressive power that is helping define music in the 21st century. In short, he is a fluent jazz improviser, an imaginative composer, a virtuoso pianist, a dynamic Brazilian and someone who loves to make his piano sing, all wrapped into one.

Cosford Cinema at UM
Sept 24: The Sky Above
Sept 26: Passions of a Cinemaniac

THE SKY ABOVE is a beautifully shot portrait filled with subdued drama about complex, paradoxical identities in the 21st-century city. The editor, Ricardo Pretti, forged it into a poetic and spiritual unit that often feels like a feature film. That also makes it a meditation about real and unreal and about the effect of cinema itself.

Scholar and filmmaker Cezar Migliorin will be present to discuss the film and the post-industrial Brazilian film. The evening will also feature a screening of Cezar Migliorin’s film ACTION AND DISPERSION.

PASSIONS OF A CINEMANIAC is the cinebiography of José de Oliveria, who from childhood to old age saw death take family members and his best friends. But in his love for Edna and in his passion for cinema he found the strength to face the misfortunes of life and to live a grand and delirious cinematographic dream. This film exemplifies the collaborative work of hundreds of film and video making collectives throughout Brazil. Dissatisfied with mainstream filmmaking, young men and women have taken the initiative to join these collectives into networks that include production, cineclubs and the creation of new forms of cinephilia.

This screening will feature filmmaker Carlos Eduardo "Dudu" Magalhães, who will be present to discuss his work with the audience.
