Books & Books and the Centro Cultural Brasil-USA da Florida (Brazil-USA Cultural Center/CCBU) continue the yearlong cultural exploration of Brazil. Our series called CULTURAL CUP 2.0 will focus on the culture, traditions, arts, music and gastronomy of the twelve Host Cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the exciting worldwide soccer tournament that will happen in Brazil next year.

Our next stop is the city of
CURITIBA

Curitiba is a world reference in urban planning and creative programs. It is one of the largest cities in the prosperous southern region of Brazil. Our guest speaker will be Maria Elisa Mercer, a Brazilian architect and urban designer. After a brief stint with planning guru Jaime Lerner, Maria Elisa developed her professional career in the U.S. She will present and discuss what is so special about Curitiba's urban planning and innovative programs.

Our guest speaker, Maria Elisa Mercer is a Brazilian architect and urban designer, born and raised in Curitiba. After a brief stint with planning guru Jaime Lerner, she developed her professional career at the prestigious Miami firm DPZ Architects & Town Planners.

In the past decade, Maria Elisa has designed regional plans, codes, new towns, as well as suburban retrofit projects around the globe, and collaborated with the Sprawl Repair Manual (Island Press, 2010) and the SmartCode. Locally, she performed a significant role on Miami 21, the largest form-based zoning code in the US developed through a partnership between DPZ, the City of Miami and a multidisciplinary team of consultants.

Having worked on masterplans in the US, Latin America, China and Middle East, Maria Elisa has combined her international experience with the Brazilian culture, designing communities from north to south.

She is actively engaged in pursuing a positive change to the urban planing practice in her native country, promoting sustainable growth through the lens of the New Urbanism. She has lectured in many cities and is in the process of translating important titles in Portuguese. Most recently, Maria Elisa has accepted an invitation to teach Urban Design at the School of Architecture, University of Miami.
