RIO DE JANEIRO!

Saturday, Dec 1, from 11a.m. to 1pm
at the Key Biscayne Library
299 Crandon Boulevard, Key Biscayne, FL 33149

Throughout 2012 CCBU celebrated the diversity and richness of Brazilian culture presenting the CULTURAL  CUP, the cultural tour of the twelve host cities of the FIFA World Cup that will take place in Brazil, in 2014. The program presented in partnership with the Miami Dade County Public Library System, began at the West Dade Regional Library and later traveled to the Key Biscayne Library. The program focused on the culture and regional characteristics of each of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup each month.

If the Amazon is Brazil’s lungs, Salvador its soul, Rio de Janeiro, “the marvelous city”, is its heart and is also the CULTURAL CUP’s finale.

Rio is a city of unusual urban diversity, with beaches, mountains, skyscrapers and the omnipresent favelas (shanty towns) all woven into the fabric of the landscape. On the streets, Rio’s energy is blazing; it is a city filled of history, music and culture. Its inhabitants, called “cariocas”, and visitors, enjoy the spectacular outdoors, jogging, biking, surfing, hang-gliding or just walking and chatting along the beaches.

Rio’s Carnaval is considered the biggest popular celebration in the planet, attracting people from all over the world to watch and participate in the samba schools parade or follow countless bands along the streets.

The New Year celebration is another spectacular party when approximately two million people, dressed in white, fill Copacabana Beach to see the beautiful fireworks.

Rio is a celebration of life!

PROGRAM (will be presented in English):

11–11:15am – Welcome and typical Brazilian refreshments
11:15-11:40am -  Rio’s presentation (power point/ short video, informal talk)
11:40-11:55am -  Author Cassia Martins, a native of Rio de Janeiro State who currently lives in Miami will read from her book “Born in Rio”. “Born in Rio” is a fiction novel that tells the story of Rita Ray, a driven New York banker who goes back to Brazil to discover what drove her mother to immigrate to the United States with her as a child.
12-12:50 p.m. –  Explore the rhythms of Rio de Janeiro with Gene de Souza, host of the award-winning radio program Café Brasil on 88.9FM WDNA. Gene will give a musical tour of Rio de Janeiro, as he talks about the genres that were born in the marvelous city, like choro, samba, bossa nova, samba and more. Learn about the great composers and performers, and their incredible stories. Not to be missed!
