Born in Rio de Janeiro, Nélida Piñon is a renowned Brazilian author whose novels have been translated in 13 different countries. Since the publication of her first novel, Guia Mapa de Gabriel Arcanjo, in 1961 she has received numerous international awards, such as the Juan Rulfo for Latin-American Literature and the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award. In 1996, six years after her induction to the Brazilian Academy of Letters, she became the institution’s first female president.

Laurentino Gomes presents“1822”

Laurentino Gomes, is a journalist and a contemporary Brazilian non-fiction writer. His historical books, 1808 and 1822 have remained on the bestseller lists of Brazil and Portugal for six consecutive years and have sold over 1.5 million copies. Mr. Gomes has won the prestigious Jabuti Prize, Brazil’s most important literary honor, four times. For MBFI 2012, he will present his latest work, 1822. This detailed account of Brazil’s path to independence covers a period of fourteen years, between the return of the Portuguese Court of D. João VI to Lisbon in 1821, and the death of the Emperor d. Pedro I, in 1834.

Mr. Gomes’ participation at the 2012 MBFI was coordinated by the Centro Cultural Brasil-USA da Florida (CCBU).

November 15

The Portuguese International Parents Association (P.I.P.A) presented an exciting program to celebrate the Brazilian Heritage Week at the public school Ada Merritt K-8 Center, in Miami. Music, dance, storytelling, and many other Brazilian cultural events filled the school. The week culminated with the celebration of the Brazilian Republic Proclamation on November 15. CCBU volunteers participated at the "Roda de Histórias" (Story Circle), reading Brazilian stories in different classrooms. Congratulations to all parents and teachers who presented a wonderful event!
