The CULTURAL CUP is a yearlong program created by CCBU to explore the diversity and richness of the Brazilian culture through a “cultural tour” of the twelve Brazilian Host Cities of the 2014 Football World Cup. Each month, in partnership with the Miami Dade County Public Library System we present one these cities’ special characteristics, culture, history, music and art.

The COPA CULTURAL tour continues in
CUIABÁ!

Saturday, Sept 22, from 11a.m. to 1 p.m.
at the Key Biscayne Library
299 Crandon Boulevard, Key Biscayne, FL 33149

Cuiabá is the capital of the western state of Mato Grosso. It was a frontier boom town, founded during the gold rush in the early 18th. century. Distant and isolated after the end of the gold boom, the city had a resurgence during the war against Paraguay. Thanks mostly to the construction of Brasilia and the agricultural business, developed in the 1970s and ‘80s, Cuiabá became one of Brazil’s fastest growing cities. The city is at the confluence of three different ecosystems – The Pantanal (wetlands), the Cerrado (savanna) and the Amazon. It is considered one of the gateways to the Pantanal, a wildlife paradise considered one of the most important ecosystems of the planet, full of alligators, anacondas, jaguars, and an immense variety of birds.

PROGRAM:

11:00 to 11:15 a.m. : Welcome and typical Brazilian Refreshments

11: 15 to 11:45 a.m. :  Cuiabá Presentation - Video, photos, informal talk about the city and the Pantanal ecosystem.

11:45 a.m to 12:45 p.m.: Brazilian artist and art educator, Silvana Soriano, invites children to a fun activity: "Let's create a Handmade Book".

Children will create a handmade book to illustrated a poem of a famous Brazilian poet Manoel de Barros, a native of Cuiabá ( he has been considered one of the greatest living poets from Brazil). The poem titled : " O Menino que carregava água na peneira" (The boy who carried water in a sieve).
