HELENO. José Henrique Fonseca 2011.
Run time: 107 min. | Brazil | Language: Portuguese | subtitled

US PREMIERE. The life of Brazilian soccer star Heleno De Freitas, a legend who shone briefly but brightly through the 1940s, is brilliantly suited to the classic, big-scale cinematic treatment it receives in this handsome, passionate bio-pic from director José Henrique Fonseca. In the title role, international box-office star Rodrigo Santoro (known in the US for his Hollywood appearances in Love Actually and the upcoming What To Do When You're Expecting? with Jennifer Lopez) is nothing short of electrifying.

Heleno's legendary goal-scoring and leadership abilities were coupled with a dramatic temper and intense, obsessive focus that led to fights with his own teammates. Off the field, his charisma and magnetism made him an irresistible focus of Rio's nightlife, and women easily fall into his arms (such as the alluring nightclub singer played by Colombian actress Angie Cepeda). Tragically, Heleno's brash, hot-headed lifestyle eventually caught up to him. By the age of 30 he was traded to a football club outside of the country, and eventually forced to stop playing and committed to a psychiatric ward, due to his rapid, syphilis-induced, decline.

Shot in elegant, crisp black & white, and with glorious sequences capturing the excitement of Heleno's abilities on the field in Brazil's national sports obsession and the glamorous, chic nightlife of Rio de Janeiro in the '40s, this is grand, epic movie-making. - Jaie Laplante

RODRIGO SANTORO AND DIRECTOR JOSÉ HENRIQUE FONSECA ARE EXPECTED TO BE PRESENT AND ANSWER QUESTIONS FOLLOWING THE SCREENING.
