SEPTEMBER 12 - Brazilian author Beti Rozen at Books & Books Family event

stolen spirit Embark on a Brazilian adventure with Centro Cultural Brasil-USA and the books from Sem Fronteiras Press.

Brazilian author, Beti Rozen, and American author, Peter Hays, have several books for children of different ages, available in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, that are mostly about Brazil’s history, its culture, or the experiences of Brazilian immigrants. Inspired by their children’s book, Stolen Spirit (available in English and Portuguese), their presentation will include a brief overview of Brazil’s history: the arrival of the Portuguese, their impact on the Guarani Indians, and the period of slavery that followed which brought Africa’s influence on the country.

Next, based on their picture book, Without Words (in English, ages 5 and up), Beti and Peter will encourage children to draw one event from their lives that has had meaning for them, especially if they are immigrants or the children of immigrants.

Finally, Peter and Beti will focus on Brazil’s rich culture including Africa’s influence on music. Children will be encouraged to participate in a “jam” by playing percussion instruments. This presentation will be in English but can include translation into Portuguese and/or Spanish if necessary.
